Meet the father son team that played critical leadership roles in each of these designations and Jay presents on the IBA, and Jajean presents on Ramsar.

Each year millions of birds die in collisions with buildings including homes, condo's and workplaces. Causes include windows, lights, location, and weather conditions. All of these factors have a devastating impact on birds.  The Niagara region which is heavily urban needs to pick it up in terms of designing for the safety of birds. 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Program Title: The Bird Friendly and Biophilic City: Integrating Safe Natural Habitats into Urban Design and Planning
Picture

Presented by Timothy Beatley

Dr. Beatley is the Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities, in the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning, School of Architecture, at the University of Virginia.

Much of his work focuses on the subject of sustainable communities by which cities and towns can fundamentally reduce their ecological footprints, while at the same time become more livable and equitable places.  He believes that sustainable a resilient cities represent our best hope for addressing today's environmental challenges.  He is a pioneer when it comes to nature friendly and bird friendly design.  He is an author, and founder of groups including the Biophilic Cities Network.  He has worked on defining principles of smart growth, coastal resiliency, and sustainable development. His current book, "The Bird Friendly City; Creating Safe Urban Habitats" is an enormous contribution leading the way on how to design and plan for bird-safe environments in urban settings, such as those throughout the Niagara River Corridor.

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION
Program Title: Coloring the Conservation Conversation

Picture
Presented by J. Drew Lanham

Dr. Lanham is Distinguished Alumni Professor of Wildlife Ecology at Clemson University, a National Audubon board member, and a contributor to Bird Note on NPR. His focus is on the ecology of songbirds and the intersections of race, place, and conservation, with wild birds as the conduit for understanding.

Social justice and race have been a fundamental focus of 2020. The Black Lives Matters movement emerged as a reaction to both generations of racism, and the rise of American politics since 2016.  J. Drew Lanham is a leader in the social justice movement and has given voice to raising awareness and conscience as it relates to being an African American man and a profoundly important conservationist.  Dr. Lanham will discuss what it means to embrace the full breadth of his African American heritage, his deep kinship to nature, and the adoration of birds. The convergence of ornithologist, college professor, poet, author, and conservation activist, blend to bring our awareness of the natural world and our moral responsibility to move it forward in new ways. Candid by nature, and because of it, Lanham will examine how conservation must be a rigorous science, and an evocative art, inviting diversity and race to play active roles in celebrating our natural world.
