DR. Timothy Beatley

Program Title: "The Bird-Friendly and Biophilic City: Integrating Safe Natural Habitats into Urban Design and Planning"
Dr. Beatley is the Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities, in the Department of Environment and Planning at the School of Architecture and Environmental Planning, School of Architecture, at the University of Virginia.

​Much of his work focuses on the subject of sustainable communities by which cities and towns can fundamentally reduce their ecological footprints, while at the same time become more livable and equitable places.  He believes that sustainable a resilient cities represent our best hope for addressing today's environmental challenges.He is a pioneer when it comes to nature friendly and bird friendly design.  He is an author, and founder of groups including the Biophilic Cities Network.  He has worked on defining principles of smart growth, coastal resiliency, and sustainable development. His current book, "The Bird Friendly City; Creating Safe Urban Habitats" is an enormous contribution as to how to design and plan for bird-safe environments in urban settings, such as those throughout the Niagara River Corridor.
